To Whom it May Concern,
In 1985, I installed a SWHIFT Off-Peak Heating System in my home in Shelley, Idaho. It utilizes a 1200 gallon stainless tank for water storage. Utah Power and Light is the electrical supply company in our area and they offer a considerable discount for power utilized between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. Thus, by heating the water in the storage tank to approximately 180 degrees during those hours and circulating it to a heat exchanger in my forced air system, I can heat my entire house (of approximately 4800 square feet) with the SWHIFT System. The circulating pump is tied to my thermostat, thus whenever the house thermostat calls for heat, the blower in my propane furnace and the water circulating pump come on automatically. As an added bonus, there is a 40 gallon stainless tank suspended in the 1200 gallon tank and all domestic hot water is circulated through this smaller tank on its way to my conventional hot water heater. I never run out of hot water and after a few years of never having my conventional hot water heater cycling on, except to maintain temperature from non-use, I bypassed it altogether. I also have never used my propane furnace to provide supplemental heating to the house.
If you have questions about this unit, you are welcome to give me a call at 208-357-1908.
At the present time, my total electrical bills for the house (including lights, cooking stove and electrical clothes drier) for the past 3 winter months (Dec, Jan, Feb) have averaged $125.94 per month. This has included several weeks of weather where evenings drop well below zero degrees Fahrenheit. I have enclosed a copy of these bills for your information. As you can see, the off-peak price of electricity is about 16% of the on-peak price. Thus, the unit has paid for itself many times over.

Utah Power & light customers:
SAVE 30% TO 70% ON YOUR ELECTRIC BILLS?
WHAT IS OFF PEAK ELECTRICITY? Power companies like Utah Power and Light produce electricity 24 hrs a day. For environmental reasons they cannot produce less power at night than they do in the day time. There is a national problem that many power companies are facing: Sometimes they cannot provide all the electricity during the day that is needed and they are producing way too much at night. If they cannot sell the electricity as it is produced, it is a total loss of profit.
THE SOLUTION: Entice homeowners to change from primary day time use to night time primary use. The incentive…lower electric rates! This solution is good for the country, Utah Power and Light, the environment and you, the customer! By moving substantial numbers of customers off primary daytime usage to night time off peak produced electricity, more on peak electricity becomes available for them to sell to new customers. The power company gets more revenue without building more generation capability which is good for the taxpayers, the country and the environment. YOU, the customer can get a substantial reduction in your power bills!
WHY CHANGE TO THE OFF PEAK PROGRAM ? By installing a SWHIFT off peak electric system in your home virtually all the heat and hot water you use during the day and night can come from the reduced night time rates! Will you not be able to use day time electricity? Of course you can! The day time rates are higher, but the new lower cost of your heating and hot water more than off set the difference.
